2023 Missouri Offense Part 1: Wide Zone Strong

Looking at why Kirby Moore was one of the best new OCs this past season.

Missouri flew under the radar to many, but they were one of the surprising teams of the 2023 season. From the bottom of the SEC East in 2022, to finishing just behind Georgia and getting 11 wins in 2023.

A lot of their success has to do with their young up-and-coming OC Kirby Moore. Probably not a name many have heard, but he was given the reigns and in his first year, the Tigers averaged 32 points and 434 total yards per game.

Unless you’re new here, I’m sure you can guess what their #1 play was… yep, Wide Zone. It was clear after just watching one-quarter of their film that they wanted to establish the run through Wide Zone. They ran it so much that I will break this into a multiple-part series to fit it all in. Along with diagrams of each concept, there will be tons of All-22 and End Zone film of each concept.

Wide Zone Strong

We’re going to start with their Strong side variations. These are any plays they ran to at least a 3-man surface. (A 3-man surface means 3 blockers to the play side. Mostly a guard, tackle, and tight end.) Sometimes they even ran it to a 4-man surface.

11 Personnel

When Missouri was in 11 personnel they preferred running Support, or toward a trey look. (Trey means a tight end and two receivers on the same side.) This allows the slot to handle the flat defender and the tight end to stay in the box.
