In a display of complete domination, the Packers dismantled the Dallas Cowboys defense this past weekend in the NFL Wild Card. As a Wide Zone enthusiast, it was great to see the system thrive in a game of that magnitude.
They established the run early, which kept the offense ahead of schedule. This allows the offense to be aggressive on early downs with deep play actions. The Cowboys were on their heels and they did very little to slow them down.
Wide Zone
Matt LaFleur comes from the Shanahan coaching tree. Like those that come of that system, Wide Zone and its complements will be the foundation for the offense. The Packers offensive line put on a Wide Zone clinic.
18 Wanda
This example is from the first drive, where the Packers set the tone up front. It is just a simple 1 back weakside wide zone call. With the wide technique of the defensive end, the back knows this ball will cut back inside.
The center displaces the 2i, and the left tackle easily seals the backside linebacker. This leaves a giant lane for the running back.
