We started our Play Pass series with the two most common Play-Pass concepts, Drift and Dagger. They both attack the defense using dig routes.
In case you missed the first 2 here are the links:
Read is another Day 1 install in the Shanahan System. It is designed to take advantage of the space between the linebackers and safety but is attacking the seams and using curl routes instead of the in-breaking Digs.
Rules:
Tagged Receiver - The tagged outside receiver (X in the example above) has the read route. He will drive to 20 yards and make a decision. If there is a safety over the top, he will curl. In some rare cases, if there is no deep safety, he will continue down the seam for a potential shot play.
Opposite outside receiver- The Z in this example also has a curl, but without the option to run the deep route.
Flat Route - There will always be either a tight end or back releasing into the flats to the called side. This creates a curl/flat stretch on the flat defender.
