We had to pivot our running game this past season, and our best play became the gap scheme counter.

Before we discuss how we specifically utilized gap schemes, and how we tied it to our zone offense, it is important we set the foundational rules of the system.

Terminology

I’ve learned over the years while talking to coaches across the country that no terminology is universal. Counter can mean different things to different people, so when I speak about Gap schemes here is what I mean:

Counter

Counter = Guard trapping the end man. There is a second puller, but it can be anyone you want. Tackle, Fullback, Tight End, H-Back, Running Back, but it’s all the same for the offensive line.
